Over the last year, SWASH™ leaders have diligently worked with producers, integrators and leading names in academia to better understand how SWASHCOOL-CELL™ can benefit users the most in extending the life of evaporative cooling pads.
As our team learned more about water quality variances from farm to farm and well to well, we also learned how to gain greater performance from SWASHCOOL-CELL™ in these situations by working with the Ag & Environmental Services Labs at the University of Georgia Extension service.
What we learned is that the best way to get the most out of your SWASHCOOL-CELL™ is to adjust application based on your water’s alkalinity.
Why does alkalinity matter for cool cells?
Alkalinity is defined as the buffering capacity of water and its ability to maintain a stable pH. For cool cells, water pH should ideally be kept between 6 (slightly acidic) and 8 (slightly caustic). Higher than 8 and an evaporative cooling pad is likely to face scaling.
Recommended Application of SWASHCOOL-CELL™
To maximize the effectiveness of SWASHCOOL-CELL™, application timing should vary based on water alkalinity. For water sources with an alkalinity of less than 150, SWASHCOOL-CELL™ can be added to the cool cell sump during the last few weeks of a flock. For water with an alkalinity higher than 150, it’s best to add the product in between flocks.
For example, this farm has low alkalinity as just 20 ppm and the pH levels are in the ideal range for cool cells. Application of SWASHCOOL-CELL™ can occur anytime within the last few weeks of the flock for ideal results.
This farm is showing alkalinity, pH, and calcium and magnesium levels slightly higher than the first example. In this case, we would recommend addition of SWASHCOOL-CELL™ in the last couple of weeks of the flock.
At this farm, they are facing significantly harder water with alkalinity falling at 230 ppm. Cool cells will benefit from the product’s ability to stem the buildup of mineral scale if applied in between flocks.
